Freelancing is hard enough without chasing money
Hours on scraps of paper
Notes, calendars and memory don’t add up to an accurate invoice.
Forgetting to bill work
A couple of hours here and there, never invoiced, adds up to real money over a year.
Awkward chasing
Without a clear list, it’s hard to know which invoices are late and by how much.
Log your time. The invoices follow.
Add your clients
Each one can have their own hourly rate and payment terms, or use your defaults.
Log your hours
Date, client and a start and finish time (or just the hours). The rate and amount fill themselves in.
Invoice and get paid
Give an invoice a number and tag the hours it covers. The total adds up, and it tells you when it’s due or overdue.
See what’s overdue at a glance
Every invoice gets a due date from the client’s payment terms. Unpaid invoices show Awaiting payment, Due soon or Overdue, and overdue ones are tinted red. Type the date paid and it turns green.
- Totals added up from your logged hours
- Other costs and sales tax or VAT

Every client’s rate, hours and balance
Give each client their own rate and terms. The Clients tab adds up their hours, the work you’ve done, what’s been invoiced, what’s been paid, and what they still owe you.
- Hourly rate per client, or your default
- Hours, work done, invoiced and paid
- Work not yet invoiced, so nothing slips

Hi, I’m Lee
I run Sheet Leveller on YouTube, where I make quick, no-nonsense Excel tutorials.
This log uses the same time formulas as my timesheet tutorials, plus SUMIF by client, to take the admin out of freelancing.
Questions
Does it create the invoice document?
No. It tracks your invoices, what they add up to and whether they’ve been paid. Use it alongside the invoices you send.
Can each client have a different rate?
Yes. Set a rate per client on the Clients tab, or leave it blank to use your default.
What if I work past midnight?
Times like 22:00 to 01:30 work out correctly.
Can I add sales tax or VAT?
Yes. Set your rate on the Settings tab and it’s added to every invoice. Leave it at 0% if you don’t charge it.
Does it use macros?
No. It’s a normal .xlsx file, so there are no security warnings and nothing to enable.
Which versions of Excel does it work with?
Microsoft 365, Excel 2010 or later on Windows, and Excel for Mac. It’s built for Microsoft Excel.
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay once and the file is yours to keep.
