Settling an estate means dozens of tasks, in no particular order
Too many things at once
Calls, letters, forms and deadlines arrive in a steady stream, often in the first few weeks.
Money moving in and out
Payments to and from the estate account need to be recorded so nothing is missed.
Losing track
It is hard to remember who you spoke to, what they said and what is still open.
Work through the checklist. See what is left.
Start with the Summary
Add the person who died, the will details and the lead executor. The totals update as you type.
Work through the checklist
Choose Yes as each step is done. Progress shows on the Summary, and you can skip anything that doesn’t apply.
Log every call and payment
Record each payment in and out of the estate account, and a line for every call, letter and email.
Net estate and what is left to share
Assets, debts, costs and gifts add up to the net estate and what is left to share. Nothing to calculate by hand.
- Assets and debts by ownership
- Funeral costs and specific gifts included
- A clear note that it is an estimate
| Item | Amount ($) |
|---|---|
| Total value of assets | 126,700.00 |
| Total debts | 39,600.00 |
| Net estate value | 87,100.00 |
| Funeral and other costs | 6,300.00 |
| Left to share after costs and gifts | 80,000.00 |
Every step to settle the estate, in order
From the first few days to sharing out what is left, each stage has its own tasks and a tip at the top.
- Early actions, notifying people, the funeral and settling the estate
- Done? and date columns fill in as you go
- Progress shown on the Summary

Money in and out, with the balance worked out
Record each payment as it happens. The balance updates as you go, so you always know what is in the account.

Hi, I’m Lee
I run Sheet Leveller on YouTube, where I make quick, no-nonsense Excel tutorials.
The Executor Organiser is built the same way: simple formulas, clear tips, and totals that add themselves up.
Questions
Do I need to be a solicitor to use it?
No. It’s designed for family members and executors. It is an organiser, not legal advice.
Does it store passwords or PINs?
No. The file asks you to record where they are kept, not the passwords themselves.
Can I add more rows?
Yes. Right-click a row inside a section and choose Insert.
Does it use macros?
No. It’s a normal .xlsx file, so there are no security warnings and nothing to enable.
Which version of Excel do I need?
Excel 2016, Microsoft 365 or a more recent version. It is an Excel file, not a Google Sheets file.
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay once and the file is yours to keep.
