How to Calculate Hours Worked in Excel

To start, we have a table with the time when an employee started and finished work.

To calculate the hours worked, we simply subtract the earlier time from the later one – but we must remember to set the correct formatting for the cells before we start the calculation.

If you need more information on how to set the formatting, watch our tutorial on how to insert and format time in Excel.

Once the formatting is set, click in the cell where we want the result to appear.

Type in the “equal” sign, click on the cell with the later time, and then insert the minus sign.

Finally, add the time logged under “Start Work” and press “Enter”.

That’s it!

We have the result – on Monday, the employee worked nine hours and thirty minutes in total.

If you need to calculate the hours worked for each day of the week, simply click on the bottom right corner of the cell containing the formula and drag down the cells where you need the formula to do the calculation.

But watch out – if the times when the employee started and finished work span midnight, the result will be a set of hash signs.
